NVOSS2008 Software and Services

  • Code Base The software installation for NVOSS2008 is based on the software distributed with the NVO book, which is also available online here. In addition to this code base, software and services will be used as defined below.

  • Software
    • VOClient provides an API that allows applications to be developed in a wide variety of languages. Using these interface, we've developed a set of command-line interface tools that provide immediate access to services such as the Sesame name resolver, the NVO Registry, and Data Access Layer (DAL) data services. VOClient SVN
    • DalServer provides both reference code for the DAL services, enhancing the service specifications by illustrating how the service specifications can be implemented, as well as a toolkit which can be used to build actual services. DalServer SVN
    • Tomcat will be used by DalServer, and should be installed on day 1.
    • Small python codes to show XML parsing (GG)
      • Just a suggestion: you can use the VOTable library from VOlib to read generic XML; see slide 15 from this Aus-VO presentation. -- RayPlante - 19 Jun 2008
    • Small python client code to OpenSkyQuery (SK)
    • Small python code to support SOAP services with CherryPy (MG)
    • Astroweka is a set of extensions to Weka; a popular, open-source, data mining toolkit; for use in astronomy.
    • CherryPy is a pythonic, object-oriented HTTP framework. CherryPy allows developers to build web applications in much the same way they would build any other object-oriented Python program.
    • ZSI is for launching soap services from Python.
    • Stilts is a library for manipulating tables

  • Services
    • NVO Portal consists of a suite of Web and CLI tasks which facilitate data discovery in the Virtual Observatory. These tools allow users to find data, manipulate and filter tables, extract data near a single source or a list of targets and combine information from multiple datasets.
    • Open Sky Query allows you to cross-match astronomical catalogs and select subsets of catalogs with a general and powerful query language.
    • Vim: An NVO portal component to investigate 2 - 1000 sources from multiple surveys. Vim SVN.
    • Casjobs is an online workbench for large scientific catalogs, designed to emulate and enhance local free-form query access in a web environment.
    • Database services at NOAO to support SQL teaching and to support students who install DAL services.
