Proposed Summer School Agenda

The idea here is to group lessons in blocks according to how they may be done in a real research setting. Ideally each day would have a punchline result which the talks would work toward. This covers a five day Summer school with the potential for another three days of projects, not outlined here. The names associated with each topic are examples of faculty that have presented the material in the past, or have experience in the area. Day 5 is devoted to a workshop setting in which students would choose one of a few science projects, chosen by the faculty, to duplicate with the help of the faculty.

With the addition of a day for data publishing and three days for student projects, the current agenda spans 9 days. This could happen over a weekend starting on Monday and ending on the following Wednesday. The student projects will begin on Day 7 and will continue on Day 8 with presentations on Day 9.

The order of research tasks is as follows:

  • Discover data
  • Access tabular data
  • Access imaging data
  • Visualize data
  • Analyze data

Agenda:

* designates a topic that has been covered in past Summer schools. The day and time is in reference to when the talk was given in 2006. In all cases, the presenter was the same as noted unless indicated in ().
